1/7/2023 - 3/22/2023
The artworks in this gallery were chosen from the museum’s collection to complement a multidisciplinary residency to be held at the Weatherspoon Art Museum between March 23 - April 1. Called When We were Queens… and featuring dancer/choreographer Murielle Elizéon in collaboration with musician Shana Tucker, the performances will explore the pairs’ respective relationship to ancestry, history, and generational and racial trauma through music and dance. The performers will address the unspoken stories that live in the bodies of women of color from the African diaspora while simultaneously investigating performer/audience dynamics through choreographed immersive experiences. The artworks on view similarly show the human body under observation, constraint, and movement.
Through the hands-on activities offered among the artworks, we invite you to respond to what you see and add your own experiences to the mix.
