8/29/2015 - 11/29/2015
The Weatherspoon is pleased to display in its atrium a group of paintings by UNCG alumna, Maud Gatewood, in conjunction with the UNCG Department of Art's fall exhibition Remembering Maud: A Selection of Her Paintings on view in the Gatewood Gallery (September 24 - November 8, 2015). The video, White Canvas, which features insights by Gatewood and commentary by her friends will run continuously in the museum’s Association room.
One of North Carolina’s most important painters, Gatewood was born and raised in rural Yanceyville, and earned her BFA from Woman’s College (now UNCG) in 1954. In 2006 UNCG’s trustees celebrated the artist by naming the new Studio Arts Building in her honor.
Maud's importance as a painter is amply demonstrated by the number of museums and galleries across North Carolina and nearby that hold her work in their permanent collections. Many of these institutions have agreed to exhibit works from these holdings this fall (2015) and in conjunction with the UNCG Art Department and Weatherspoon Art Museum's exhibitions. View the Maud Gatewood Trail brochure and interactive map at this link.
The exhibition is organized by Elaine D. Gustafson, Curator of Collections.
