The Weatherspoon owns approximately 3,600 works on paper, of which 1,430 are unique drawings. Recognized nationally for their strength and breadth, many are part of the Dillard Collection of Art on Paper. Since 1965, the museum has enjoyed the corporate benefaction of the Dillard Paper Company - now xpedx. The company's generous support has enabled both the presentation of the museum's Art on Paper exhibitions and, through the Dillard Fund, the development of an important collection of art on paper.

Drawing Us In will highlight the diverse social, political, philosophical, and artistic ideas that have characterized American drawing over the last and current centuries. While early twentieth-century American drawings demonstrate the creative possibilities of modernism, social realism, abstract expressionism, and geometric abstraction, later contemporary works illustrate indebtedness to popular culture, mass media, and even the history of art. Both artists noted for their draughtsmanship and those less recognized in the medium are featured, including Stuart Davis, Peggy Bacon, John Graham, Lee Krasner, Robert Arneson, and Enrique Chagoya.

The show coincides with the Print Council of America's visit in May to the Durham-Chapel Hill, NC area (and WAM). The Print Council of America is a non-profit, professional organization comprised of print specialists - curators, university professors, conservators, librarians, and scholars - from the United States and Canada who meet yearly to share ideas, debate issues, and present updates on projects and recent acquisitions.
