For most of the twentieth century, sculpture seemed to be the poor relation of modernist art compared to painting. This changed, however, in the late 1960s when painting lost its central position and was replaced by a multiplicity of three-dimensional practices. Although the curatorial approach to this survey show may be unconventional, many contemporary artists shared the artistic concerns seen in these sculptural works regardless of their preferred media, for example, an interest in new sources of inspiration and an exploration of new techniques and materials.
