For many, thread as a material calls to mind the notion of craft art or perhaps handicrafts such as embroidery or knitting. The work included in this exhibition will undoubtedly confound those expectations. Although the majority of pieces feature some kind of thread element, many only evoke the material. And, rather than deriving from utilitarian purposes, all are non-functional. What these works have in common is that the artists behind them chose thread as a compositional element in order to create lines quite distinct from those possible in other media. As a result, these works surprise us with their innovation and offer us new ways of looking at art.
